School Visits

We offer a half day (10:00-12:30) or whole day (10:00-14:45) programme aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils studying local history, focusing on the history of Sharpe’s creation of toilets. Our sessions involve the following:

  • Tour by museum staff of our ‘A Toilet Story’ exhibition
  • Teacher-led tour of the museum (prompts/script provided)
  • A look at ‘old and new’ photographs of Swadlincote with analysis
  • Seeing how Swadlincote has changed with map reading skills
  • Clay activity building toilets as it was done at Sharpe’s Pottery (whole day only)
  • Creative activity making patterned tiles using transfers (whole day only)
  • ‘Design a toilet’ activity (whole day only)

We have our own risk assessment of the school session which will be sent to you when you book your session, along with the Teacher’s Pack. We do advise that you visit the museum before your visit to conduct your own risk assessment.

The session is linked to the ‘local history’ section of the current National Curriculum and develops the following skills:

  • Creativity
  • Analysis
  • Discussion
  • Observation
  • Enquiry
  • Listening

We charge £2 per pupil for a half-day session, or £3 per pupil for the whole day programme. Site tours for school groups can also be arranged, at a charge of £1.50 per pupil.
